XLRI will conduct the Xavier Aptitude Test, or XAT 2023, exam on Sunday, January 8, 2023. The XAT registration and application process is open now and the last date to apply is November 30, 2022, with a registration fee of Rs. 1800/-. While XAT is the mandatory entrance exam for XLRI admission, the XAT 2023 exam score will also be accepted for admission to more than 160 MBA colleges, including XIMB, IMT, TAPMI, and KJ Somaiya, among others.

XAT 2023 will be conducted in a single session of 3 hours duration as a computer-based test for admission to the XLRI PGDM 2023-25 batch from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM. There will be 100 MCQ type questions in XAT 2023. During the 3 hours of test duration to solve the complete question paper, there will be no sectional time limit. The XAT registration process is online only.

The full name of the XAT 2023 exam is Xavier Aptitude Test, and it is one of the largest MBA Entrance Exams in India for admission to XLRI, IMT, XIMB, TAPMI, and 160+ MBA Colleges. Every year, more than 1,00,000 candidates from all disciplines, including engineering, commerce, humanities, science, and law, apply and appear on this exam to get into the various MBA programmes offered by these top B-schools. Over the years, the Xavier Aptitude Test has become an easier test, but to get a high percentile (90+) on this exam requires 4-5 months of serious preparation.

XLRI conducts the XAT exam on behalf of XAMI. For more than 70 years, XLRI has held this exam at the national level to select the most qualified students for management education. The XAT entrance exam notification was released on August 9, 2021, with key exam dates and a complete schedule. Last year also, despite the COVID pandemic, XLRI conducted the XAT exam as a centre-based test in 72 cities in India.

The Xavier Aptitude Test is the full name of the XAT exam. It is the Admission Test for admission to MBA/PGDM programme in XLRI and other top MBA colleges like XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI Manipal and 160 other top MBA colleges in India. XLRI will offer admission to its Jamshedpur and Delhi campuses on the basis of this exam score only and will not accept any other test score. There are more than 70 cities and more than 100 venues where XAT 2023 exam will be conducted in India.


The following changes have been introduced in the exam by XLRI:

  • The application fee for the XAT 2023 exam has been raised to Rs. 1800/-.
  • The exam has now changed to a computer-based test from a paper-based test.
  • Single slot, single-day exam
  • The time of the test was shifted from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
  • The total number of questions increased from 99 to 100.
  • There is no essay writing test.
  • NAT Questions with No Negative Marking Have Been Introduced
  • All questions are of the MCQ type.
  • A question paper with 4 sections has a different number of questions.
  • The last section on GK with 25 questions is not counted for percentile calculation.
  • Visually impaired candidates with a scribe are given an additional 25 minutes to solve Part 1 of the exam.
  • Marks for every correct answer: +1
  • Negative marking for incorrect answers
  • No Negative Marking for the General Knowledge Section in Part 2 of the Question Paper
  • All the MCQ type questions have five options, with one correct option.

XLRI conducts the Xavier Aptitude Test in the month of January every year. Along with releasing the notification 2023 and finalizing the exam date, XLRI has announced the complete schedule and important dates. Although XLRI will accept scores only from the Xavier Aptitude Test, the other top MBA colleges associated with it will accept other exam scores also. XLRI has been conducting this exam for more than 70 years on behalf of XAMI. Earlier, it was a paper-based test, but since 2018, the exam has become a computer-based test.


XLRI has announced all the important dates with a complete schedule, including application fee, admit card date, exam date, and result date, among other important dates. After the extension of the last date to apply for XAT 2023, the revised dates are as under:

The Xavier Aptitude Test is an online, computer-based exam. The aggregate maximum marks in the exam are 100 for 100 questions divided into 4 sections. Each correct answer is awarded 1 mark, and each wrong answer will attract a penalty of 0.25 marks. The total time duration for the exam is 3 hours. The exam pattern is as below:

Eligibility Criteria for the Exam

The eligibility criteria for the exam require only a pass in your bachelor’s degree, while other exams need a particular percentage of marks. The eligibility to appear in the exam is probably the simplest one among all the National Level MBA entrance exams.

The registration process is online and can be completed in six simple steps at the official website. Registration dates are open from August 10 to November 30, 2021, without a late fee. You need to follow the below process while applying for the exam:

Xavier Aptitude Test 2023 Syllabus

The Xavier Aptitude Test Syllabus 2023 is divided into 4 sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension; Decision Making; Quantitative Aptitude; and General Awareness. Except for General Awareness, all the other three are core sections which determine the percentile score as well as XLRI shortlisting criteria. The score of the general awareness section is taken into account at the time of the personal interview round.

The Syllabus’s Most Important Sections

The Xavier Aptitude Syllabus 2023 will test the candidate on verbal ability, reading comprehension and logical reasoning, decision making, and quantitative aptitude and data interpretation as the key sections to determine your percentile and merit position. The other section on general awareness (GK) does not have any predefined syllabus, nor is it counted for percentile calculation. Accordingly, except for the GK section, the other three sections are the most important parts of the XAT syllabus.

The MBA selection process at XLRI and other top B-schools

On the basis of the Xavier Aptitude Test 2023 results, the selection process at XLRI and in other top B-schools will begin. At XLRI, the selection procedure is more governed by its admission policy. The other 160 member and associate B-schools will also select the candidates on the basis of exam percentile scores and as per their final admission rounds.

Good performance in the Xavier Aptitude Test and obtaining a high score in it is the mandatory requirement in the XLRI selection process for its highly ranked PGDM programme. The first step to participating in the XLRI 2023 selection procedure is to apply for the exam and simultaneously apply to XLRI Jamshedpur through the same application form. Apart from XLRI Jamshedpur, more than 150 MBA/PGDM colleges will participate in the Xavier Aptitude Test-based selection procedure for MBA admission 2023, including IMT Ghaziabad, XIM Bhubaneswar, GIM Goa, Great Lakes Chennai, TAPMI Manipal, LIBA Chennai, BIMTECH Greater Noida, FORE New Delhi, and others.

6 Stages of the Selection Procedure

There are six main stages in the XLRI selection process:

  • Submit the Registration and Application Form by November 30, 2021.
  • Applying to XLRI, IMT, TAPMI, and other preferred institutes
  • Taking the exam on January 2, 2023
  • Check your percentile on the score card.
  • Check your place in the shortlist and participate in the GD-PI-WAT of the XLRI selection process.
  • Check the final admission offer and pay the acceptance fee by the stipulated date.

How to get the XAT 2023 Admit Card?

XLRI will release the admit card for the Xavier Aptitude Test on December 20, 2021. The Admit Card will be uploaded on the official XAT exam website in the morning hours. You need to download the admit card from the website. No hard copy of the admit card will be sent to you, but you should download it and take a print of it as you will need to produce the hall ticket at the test centre. The admit card download will be available online till the exam date.

Only those candidates who have successfully registered for the exam and who have also paid the application fee can download the admit card.

Instructions for Obtaining an Admit Card

  • To download your admit card, you must first log in to the official website using your ID and password.
  • You must check your personal details, candidature and test centre details before completing your admit card download process.
  • Once you have viewed all the details, you should immediately complete the admit card download and save it.
  • Take prints on A4-sized paper after your admit card download is over.
  • In case of any difference or anomaly like your name or date of birth, you should report the mistake immediately to the exam centre at XLRI Jamshedpur.

Date of Notification for XAT 2023

The exam information with the exam date and other related dates has been released on the exam website on August 9, 2021. The XAT Notification 2023, containing all the exam details, exam format, exam centres, and all the exam dates, has been released in the leading newspapers also.

It is expected that around 1 lakh candidates will appear in the exam as the number of candidates going for exam registration in 2023 is expected to increase again. Over the years, the number of candidates applying for the Xavier Aptitude Test has increased as the data for past exam registration also reveals this fact.

The Xavier Aptitude Test is the second largest MBA entrance test to pursue MBA/PGDM in 11 member institutes and 150 associate institutes accepting XAT exam scores. Till 2017, the exam remained a paper-based test. With effect from 2018, this exam has become an online computer-based test.

The exam date is the same across the country. On a single date, the exam will be held in 72 test cities in India. However, the 2 cities abroad, namely, Kathmandu and Dubai, are no longer the test cities.
